The Colonies of Early America

Colonial America started when the Europeans settled in the New World in the 16th century, but primarily focuses on the time of thirteen British colonies.  The original colonies were:

New England Colonies
Middle Colonies
Southern Colonies
(Virginia and Maryland made up the Chesapeake Colonies)

George Washington was, perhaps, the most famous colonist.  He is often remembered as the first constitutional president of the United States, but he was also crucial in winning the war against the British in the American Revolution.  Many people do not know that he did not want to become Commander in Chief, but he was the popular choice.

Benjamin Franklin was another famous colonist.  Ben Franklin was a truly amazing man.  He was a man of many talents.  Franklin was possibly most famous for being a scientist and inventor.

Franklin invented many, many things, but most school children remember him as the man who flew a kite in a lightening storm.  He did this to prove that electricity might be harnessed.  His kite experiment proved successful, and led to his invention of the lightening rod, which, ironically, later saved his house from burning down when it was struck by lightening.  Franklin was one of several Founding Fathers who are being recognized today for their genius.

Third president Thomas Jefferson was also a famous colonist and Founding Father.  Most people know he was involved with the creation of the Declaration of Independence, but not as many realize that he was the main author of it.  Jefferson shared a strong and deep, though sometimes rocky, lifetime friendship with fellow Founding Father, John Adams.

John Adams was a deeply religious man who became the second president of the newly created United States.  His marriage and love for wife Abigail Adams is widely known and studied.  They had six children together, though only five survived.  Son John Quincy Adams grew up to become the sixth president of the US.

Abigail Adams was an amazing woman.  Often left alone to raise their five children because husband John was away on political business, she was a strong mother.  She often wrote to John, and was his strength, even from afar.  Their letters have been published and make for fascinating reading for anyone interested in studying colonial times in the words of people who lived through them.  Your little one can wear a child colonial costume and show his or her patriotic pride!
